Shari (斜里町, Shari-chō) is a town located in Okhotsk Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan.
As of October 2020, the town has an estimated population of 11,418 and a population density of 15 persons per km2. The total area is 736.97 km2.
Shiretoko National Park is situated within Shari.
During World War 2 on 22 June 1945 Shari came under attack from the submarine USS Barb. This attack was notable for being the first submarine-based rocket attack against a surface target.
Utoro, a seaside village with hotels, seafood, and onsen, is the main attraction in this area.
Shari can be reached by car, bus, or train. That being said, having a car once you're in Shari is highly desirable, so renting one in Abashiri is a reasonable idea.
Traveling by car is recommended. It is also not uncommon to see bicyclists and motorcyclists.
Shari is east of Abashiri and west of Shiretoko National Park. In fact, the village of Utoro, a part of this area, is one of the two gateways to the national park.
