Yūbari (夕張市, Yūbari-shi) is a city located in Sorachi Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan.
As of January 31, 2024, the city has an estimated population of 6,374, with 3,863 households. The total area is 763.20 km2. Hemmed in by mountains Yūbari stretches for 25 kilometers along a mountain valley.
The city is famous for the Yubari Melon and the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival, which skipped a show in 2007 due to the city's financial crisis. It is also birthplace of Mitsuharu Misawa.
Yubari is famous for the Yubari Melon. They are sold for about ¥1000 per melon.
The only hotel in the city, Hotel Mount Racey (Reisui), announced "temporarily" closure in March 2020 due to COVID-19. It has not reopened since.
It is a city that relied on coal mining. With a decline in coal demand, the mines closed in 1980s and the population shrank from a peak of 120,000 down to about 8,000 remaining.
