700 Islands of Blue! The Bahamas archipelago — Nassau's lavender shutters and conch salad on the dock, the Great Blue Hole at Andros, swimming pigs at Big Major Cay, and the Exumas' impossibly clear glacial-blue sea — is the archetypal tropical island dream.
Nassau's Paradise Island hosts the mega-resort Atlantis. Cable Beach has a luxury hotel strip. The Out Islands (Family Islands) — Exuma, Harbour Island, Eleuthera — have boutique hotels and rental cottages. Harbour Island's pink sand Pink Sands Resort is iconic. Budget guesthouses in Nassau's downtown are affordable.
Swim with the world-famous swimming pigs of Big Major Cay in the Exumas (a uniquely eccentric Bahamian spectacle), snorkel through Dean's Blue Hole — the world's second deepest blue hole (202m) — on Long Island, explore the Rose Island coral gardens by boat from Nassau, and walk the 3km of powdery pink sand on Harbour Island.
The Bahamas National Trust protects the Lucayan National Park (the world's longest charted underwater cave system) and the Andros Barrier Reef (the third longest in the world). Nassau's Nassau Grouper spawning aggregations are critically threatened — the grouper fishery is protected during spawning.
Conch is the Bahamian crustacean obsession — conch salad (raw conch with citrus, tomato and scotch bonnet) from a Nassau dock vendor is the definitive street food. Try cracked conch, peas and rice with fried plantain, johnnycakes (fried cornbread), and Sands beer — the beloved national brew.
Junkanoo (December 26 and January 1) is Nassau's extraordinary annual festival — weeks of preparation culminate in costumed groups competing through Bay Street in elaborate crepe-paper and cardboard costumes at 3am. Bahamas Billfish Tournament (spring) is one of the Atlantic's great sport-fishing events.
Eleuthera Pineapple Festival (June) celebrates the island's famous sugar-sweet pineapples with tastings and cooking competitions. The Long Island Regatta (May) is a beloved traditional sailing event unique to the southern Bahamas.
No mandatory vaccinations for most. Tap water quality varies by island — use bottled water outside Nassau and major towns. Hurricane season June–November poses significant risk — the Bahamas lies directly in the Atlantic hurricane corridor.
BTC (Bahamas Telecommunications Company) and Aliv offer 4G coverage on New Providence and Grand Bahama. Out Islands connectivity is much patchier — Eleuthera and Exuma have improving 4G but expect gaps. Resort Wi-Fi is reliable. Prepaid SIMs at Nassau airport.
