Where Jungle Meets Reef! Belize is wildly unique — a Caribbean culture in a Central American jungle, speaking English over rum punch at the base of a Maya pyramid. The Belize Barrier Reef (UNESCO), the Blue Hole, jaguars at Chan Chich, and the Maya ruins of Xunantunich wait.
Caye Caulker has affordable beach hostels and guesthouses on stilts over the turquoise sea. Ambergris Caye has luxury dive resorts. San Ignacio is the base for Maya ruins and jungle lodges. The Cockscomb Basin has eco-lodges inside the world's first jaguar preserve.
Snorkel or dive the Great Blue Hole (300m wide, 125m deep — one of the world's top dives), explore Actun Tunichil Muknal Maya sacrificial cave with skeletal remains in situ, howl back at howler monkeys at Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve, and climb Caracol's pyramid above the jungle canopy.
Belize protects 37% of its territory. The Belize Barrier Reef (UNESCO) faces bleaching pressure. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is the world's first jaguar preserve — support its conservation via Be Still Foundation donations.
Rice and beans with stewed chicken, fried plantain and coleslaw is the national meal eaten with one spoon from a styrofoam takeaway. Try garnaches (crispy tortillas with beans and cheese), belizean tamales wrapped in banana leaf, and fresh grilled lobster on Caye Caulker at the Split Beach Bar.
Lobster Fest (June–July) in Placencia, Caye Caulker and San Pedro celebrates the season opening with music, street parades and extraordinary fresh lobster at every price point. Belize Carnival (September) is a colourful independence celebration.
Independence Day (September 21) is a remarkable show of national pride for a young nation. St George's Caye Day (September 10) commemorates the 1798 Battle of St George's Caye between Baymen and Spanish forces. Garifuna Settlement Day (November 19) in Dangriga is a powerfully moving cultural event.
