La Isla del Encanto! Puerto Rico — a US territory that feels entirely its own — enchants with the cobblestone streets and pastel forts of Old San Juan, the world's largest bioluminescent bay at Mosquito Bay (Vieques), surfing at Rincon, and a cuisine that gave the world pernil, mofongo, and the original piña colada.
Old San Juan has boutique hotels inside renovated colonial buildings (El Convento Hotel is iconic). Condado has luxury beach resorts. Rincon on the west coast has surf lodges and guesthouses. Vieques and Culebra have small eco-friendly guesthouses and villa rentals near pristine beaches.
Kayak the Mosquito Bay bioluminescent lagoon on Vieques at a moonless night (the world's brightest bioluminescent bay), walk the walls of El Morro and San Cristóbal forts (UNESCO) in Old San Juan, hike El Yunque National Forest (the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system), and swim the brilliant-white sand of Flamenco Beach on Culebra.
The Mosquito Bay bioluminescence (caused by dinoflagellates) is severely threatened by boat traffic and light pollution. Only electric or kayak tours are permitted. Puerto Rico's coral reefs are under severe bleaching pressure — use only reef-safe sunscreen.
Mofongo (fried mashed plantain stuffed with garlic and pork chicharrón) is Puerto Rico's most beloved dish. Try pernil (slow-roasted pork shoulder) at a lechonera on the Lechon Highway in Guavate, tostones (twice-fried green plantain chips), and the original Piña Colada at Caribe Hilton where it was invented in 1954.
San Sebastián Street Festival (January, Old San Juan) is Puerto Rico's most beloved annual celebration — four days of salsa, music and food in the old city cobblestone streets. Casals Festival (June) is a world-class classical music festival honouring Pablo Casals.
Three Kings Day (January 6, Epiphany) is celebrated across Puerto Rico more enthusiastically than Christmas. Ponce Carnival (February) is the island's most elaborate with masked vejigante dancers. Loíza Carnival (July–August) celebrates Afro-Puerto Rican heritage.
No mandatory vaccinations for US citizens (no passport required). Dengue is present — use insect repellent especially near El Yunque. Zika was previously present — check current CDC advisories. Healthcare is US-standard. Hurricane season June–November.
Excellent 4G/5G from AT&T, T-Mobile and Claro Puerto Rico. US mobile plans typically roam freely in Puerto Rico. Hotel Wi-Fi is reliable throughout. Vieques and Culebra have improving but patchier coverage.
