The Caribbean's Sailing Heartland! SVG — the jewel chain of Mustique, Canouan, Bequia, Mayreau and the Tobago Cays Marine Park — is the Eastern Caribbean's most glamorous sailing circuit. Authentic Vincentian culture anchors this extraordinary archipelago of 32 volcanic islands.
Kingstown on St Vincent has traditional hotels. Bequia's Port Elizabeth has charming stone guesthouses overlooking the Admiralty Bay anchorage. Mustique has private villa rentals (the rock star and royalty retreat). Canouan has ultra-luxury Canouan Resort. Palm Island and Petit St Vincent are private island resorts.
Sail the Tobago Cays Marine Park (five uninhabited islands with some of the Caribbean's finest snorkelling — sea turtles feed on the turtle grass beds), hike La Soufrière volcano (1,234m) on St Vincent — an active volcano with an accessible summit crater, and explore Bequia's wooden boat-building tradition at the Bequia Boatyard.
The Tobago Cays Marine Park is one of the Eastern Caribbean's most important protected areas — boat anchoring is prohibited within the park. Green and hawksbill sea turtles feed year-round in the protected turtle grass beds. Never disturb nesting turtles.
Roasted breadfruit with jackfish is SVG's national dish — a testament to the island's deep agricultural heritage. Try arrowroot starch products (St Vincent is the world's largest arrowroot producer), saltfish souse, and black cake (a molasses-rich fruit cake soaked in rum, traditional at Christmas and weddings).
Vincy Mas (Carnival, June–July) culminates on St Vincent with a spectacular J'ouvert and costumed parade. Bequia Easter Regatta (April) is one of the Eastern Caribbean's most beloved wooden boat sailing events — three days of racing in Admiralty Bay.
Nine Mornings Festival (December 16–24) is a nine-day pre-Christmas tradition unique to St Vincent — early morning street parties with music and food from 4am onwards. This deeply community cultural event has no tourist equivalent anywhere in the Caribbean.
No mandatory vaccinations for most. Tap water is safe on St Vincent. Hurricane season June–November. La Soufrière volcano erupted in 2021 causing mass evacuation — check volcanic activity status before visiting. Healthcare at Milton Cato Memorial Hospital (Kingstown) is limited.
FLOW and Digicel offer 4G on St Vincent. Grenadine islands have progressively patchier connectivity — some smaller islands are offline entirely. Sailing the Grenadines should include download of offline charts and maps.
