America's Paradise! The US Virgin Islands deliver the Caribbean dream with American convenience — St John's Virgin Islands National Park (two-thirds of the island is protected), St Croix's Danish colonial Christiansted, St Thomas's duty-free shopping on Charlotte Amalie's harbourfront, and an approachable luxury accessible without a passport for US citizens.
St Thomas has large resort hotels in Red Hook and Secret Harbour. St John has the iconic Caneel Bay resort (being redeveloped) and luxury villa rentals — Maho Bay area suits campers and backpackers. St Croix has boutique hotels in Christiansted's colonial district.
Snorkel the Trunk Bay Underwater Snorkel Trail in Virgin Islands National Park (STJ), hike Ram Head trail to St John's dramatic southern cliffs, explore Danish-colonial Christiansted on St Croix, and duty-free shop Charlotte Amalie's main street on St Thomas — one of the Caribbean's best duty-free ports.
Virgin Islands National Park (VINP) covers 60% of St John — one of the US National Park system's most extraordinary reserves, protecting coral reefs, mangroves and tropical dry forest. Salt River Bay National Historical Park on St Croix protects the only Columbus landing site within US territory.
Fungi (cornmeal and okra — the USVI's signature side dish) with fish is the true national meal. Try kallaloo (leafy green stew with salt fish), conch fritters, and johnnycakes from roadside vendors. Virgin Islands rum (Cruzan from St Croix) is one of the Caribbean's great distilleries.
St Croix Ironman Triathlon (May) is one of the world's most scenic long-distance races. USVI Carnival (April–May, St Thomas) is a two-week celebration culminating in a spectacular Children's Parade and Adult Parade through Charlotte Amalie.
St John Festival (late June–July 4) is the most community-authentically Caribbean of the three islands' festivals. Transfer Day (March 31) commemorates the 1917 US purchase of the islands from Denmark.
No passport required for US citizens. Tap water is safe. Hurricane Maria (2017) caused catastrophic damage — infrastructure has largely recovered. Healthcare at Roy Lester Schneider Hospital (STT) and Juan Luis Hospital (STX) is US-standard. Hurricane season June–November.
AT&T and T-Mobile offer 4G/LTE — US mobile plans typically roam freely. Excellent resort Wi-Fi. St John interior has some coverage gaps.
